I used a Tokina 11-16 f/ 2.8 on my 7D and its a great wide angle lens - just sold it to a member here

Edit - taken with 7D and Tokina at 13mm

Another vote for the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 as I have one on my 7D too. The build quality is high and, while some reviews do mention intrusive CA, it's easily dealt with while processing. I'd originally planned to buy a Sigma 10-20 but decided the faster Tokina would suit my needs better.

      Cheers,
      John

      PS Nice picture Ian!

Taken at 10mm. I'm quite pleased with what it turns out image wise and I didn't have to exchange any organs to buy it. Only problem is it zooms the Nikon way not the Canon.

I use the 17-40l on a 500d but you have take into account the crop factor,as for rising early the later mornings for sunrise are almost here making it much easier to get out of bed

Go for dusk rather than dawn. SO much easier and it is quickly followed by the blue hour. What could be better? To get the blue hour before sunrise is truly almost impossible... :-)

Another one to consider is the Sigma 8-16mm - the widest you can go without all the distortions of a fish-eye. I'd certainly be looking at this if I didn't already own the Canon 10-22mm, which is superb!
