    White lens gone yellow !!

Just noticed that where i cradle my 300f4, the "white" has turned yellow. Assume it must be something to do with sweat although Dee's is still white

Anybody seen anything similar on their white lenses and any idea how to restore

I always fit neoprene covers to mine as soon as purchased ,protects from knocks and scratches to .yours sounds like a build up of sweat ,grease etc I would suggest a application of methylated spirits on a soft cloth ,anything else might remove the paint .its what we used to use for de.greasing electronics

It depends whether its just the surface of the paint that has discoloured, or it goes deeper than that.

If its just surface discolouration, then a gentle rubbing T-Cut, on a soft cloth might well ring bring the original colour back.

T-Cut being the product used to restore faded colour on car paintwork.

Being an L series lens, it should be sealed against dust ingress. Important because when T-Cut dries, and is then polished off, its generates a powdery dust.

If a gentle rubbing with T-Cut doesn't restore the paint colour, then the discolouration goes deeper into the paint, and I would say that there isn't anything you could do about it.

just tried that, quite gently and it works a treat, not going to try it too close to the switches though

Good news Stan, glad it does the job

It is a very gentle abrasive cleaner/polish, that not only removes surface bloom, from car body paintwork, it also restores the shine.

Not something to be done on a regular basis, as it does remove a micron layer of paint, as the cloth that you apply it with will show you,

Another useful product for polishing out scratches on perspex/acrylic wristwatch glasses, is good old fashioned Brasso, which works much like Jewelers polish.

Just need to keep your sweaty hands of the lens barrel now .

Maybe do something like Jeff does, or wear a thin white cotton glove, like historians do when handling old manuscripts.

very soon the weather is going to be cold enough to have to wear gloves when out shooting anyway.

It is strange i had not noticed the discolouration before and am wondering if it just happened last week in Menorca, as it was very hot and i was sweating much more than usual

caused by the beach grab shots of the "ample" Menorcan flightless birds you were taking when Dee wasn't watching....

I have looked into a cover in the past but those that i have found are more or less a one piece which restricts retracting the lens hood for storage

we were mainly on a "nature" reserve rather than a "naturist" reserve......I think

I thought most of them came in multiple parts that fixed to the different parts of the lens. But having said that, there's one here for the 300 f4 that seems to work with the hood - http://outdoorphotographygear.co.uk/...ne-lens-covers - although it's a little hard to tell from the only photograph available

that one looks the same as I have seen and once it is on you cant retract the hood
