Has anyone used the swapping / replace filter on flickr?

I've got an edited image that I want to swap over and don't want to delete the original as others have commented on it - but I'm finding when using the replace option its taking ages to upload, and is going so slow it would probably take all morning!

I've tried this once before and gave up as I was feed up waiting around and just assumed it was some bug at the time, clearly not

Maybe the image size is a factor ? but when uploading images normally they fly up - any ideas ? or anyone else finding this takes a crazy amount of time to swap

Hi Ian I used this option quite a few times ,I've only found it takes slightly longer though ie a few minutes ,wonder if it was a bug when you tried,my shot file range from 8 to 10 mb but I'm guessing your will be larger.

I've used the replace this image facility. It doesn't delete the comments and faves, at least not for me. Not had much problem uploading but then I generally use JPEG.

Hope you find a way to make it work.

        Hi Dave

I've just looked and the file size is 113mg - What does confuse me is why the swap feature would take so long as I can upload an image within a couple of seconds, but when swapping same image after some editing ( Di will probably know the one) it hangs and takes ages, so much so I cancel it

very odd, maybe I'll try putting a smaller file size up - but I'm at a loss as why the first goes up fast the edited hangs ...

My Flickr uploads are resized to 1400px on the longest edge (1050px for portrait) and quality set to 9 in Photoshop
They upload in no time at all
When you replace an image that's already been posted on the Forum the original post disappears and you have to repost that image.
If you make a slight alteration within Flickr it gives the option to replace the original or save it as a new file

cheers Sam ....or Mike ( confused) but least I didn't call you Stan

the issue isn't when posting the link here as I know if I delete the image it will need reposting - the problem seems to be when using the replace feature in flickr, it then just hangs, or at least takes a VERY long time you re upload the changed image

I know I can delete within flickr but I really don't want to do that as people that posted there will have there comments removed - I try resizing the image tomorrow, but what I don't understand is why I can upload images within a few seconds no matter of the size, but when try to use the replace option it hangs.....very odd

              Re: Flickr users

first off i always resize either in ps6 or aperture ,the default upload size being 1024 pixels on longest edge or multiples of that if you wish to frame fill for instance the pano type one of the stags i wanted to fill the frame with was 3072 on longest edge .this should reduce upload time and also improve quality ,never leave flickshit to play around with your image .

just one word of caution flick-mess has been playing tricks all weekend ,usually a sign that there going to make loads of changes shortly ,this MIGHT be your problem ,on the other hand perhaps you should pay your i.p or just put some more coal in your machine

Cheers for your feedback Jeff & Di

I'll try resizing the image as I'm wondering if thats not the issue as its a more involved process when uploading - we'll see later

As I've only recently replaced an already posted image on Flickr all I can say is yes, it took a little longer but nothing that I thought was too long.

if you had to guess what double the time? I've not resized image yet but on the last couple of attempts I left it a good few minutes and the upload bar had hardly moved

Yeh I would say double. And for more info I never resize an image before uploading. Whatever it is after processing that's what I upload.

Found the issue, least when swapping edited files - it doesn't like the larger file sizes

I changed the size to 1024 pixels on longest edge ( as per Jeffs recommendation) changed from Tiff to Jpeg and the image swapped over within a few seconds. The process isn't as fast as the original upload and clearly Flickr struggles with larger images and maybe even Tiff files, but least now I know should I want to swap an image its a case of reducing and converting

                            Odd...

Ah there in lays the problem. I never ever upload Tiffs, mainly through fear of them being pinched, assuming anyone would want them. I export from LR as JPEG after processing within CC and sending back to LR.
