    The 70-200 f2.8 Mkii is a corker

Just thought I would share this. It is one of my favourite photographs from Athens, and in my mind just shows the power of the 70-200 f2.8 Mkii (and this was taken at f2.8):

agree 100% ....but the only issue is the weight - given a choice it would be my walkabout lens but after a few hours with that I'm ready to put on the 24-105 and give my arms a rest

Lovely photo, love the separation that the 2.8 gives the main subject. Alas its not my arms that I have to worry about, more my pockets. Hence I'll stick to the poor man's version.

In the mean time, I'll wonder why she's wearing wellies.

        I did wonder!

Ian, it is heavy, but the results can be awesome! I carried around for about four or five hours, albeit with breaks for coffee and lunch. I also had my 24-70 in my bag round my neck. That is a fairly weighty bit of glass as well. All in all a good day's exercise!

Its called fashion....didn't you know that, least thats what my wife just told me

I tend to use my rucksack if heading out for the day so can swap lenses around - but my limit is similar to yours. I was at Valencia zoo a few months back and had the lens on all day other than a lunch break and by the end of the day my arms were pretty shot - I'm looking at getting the 100-400 and will get a mono pod at the same time so hopefully giving me a bit of a rest whilst waiting for the shot

The new 100-400 looks pretty awesome. I could easily trade in my 70-300 and quite possibly my 400 f5.6 - although that is as sharp as pins...

I am well pleased with the 70-200 Mk2 - wish it was a bit lighter though! It can get a bit tiring carrying the lens /camera around.
But the lens does perform well.

Really like my 70-200 as well.

Just wondering if its weight is a concern the 100-400 might be more so because I believe it weight another 500g, unless I've read some duff info.

I'm pretty sure you've looked at wrong info, when I looked at the specs the weight wasn't too far off the 70-200

I love my Mk I too, but also find the weight a bit much sometimes. However, all is forgiven when I look at the images, and I'm continually blown-away with what it can produce :)
However, the size and weight can be tricky sometimes. Because of that I've just got a 70-300DO for when I want a more compact solution. Apparently it's a bit of a dog at 300mm, but I'm impressed with the size and weight so far. Time will tell when I get chance to test it out properly, but it's almost certainly going to disappoint compared to the 70-200.

I hate to tell you - that was my worst ever lens. I was so pleased when I first bought it, but it was utterly useless, a complete dog of a lens... Hopefully that was only my copy and you will have a great copy. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. It was the first and only Canon lens I have ever sold.

Good luck. I am looking forward to seeing your photographs to prove me wrong!

Yes, I've heard it's a bit of a dog too Richard. Lucky I got it cheap! lol
I'm out this weekend to put it through it's paces, but in all honesty I'm not expecting too much and I've set my hopes particularly low with this one. It just may (?) be useful in capturing my little one run around the park at distance.
I'll post some samples when available, probably as a warning to other members!
