    Losing the will...

Been off the forum for a while as I'd bitten the bullet and was concentrating on getting my images organised. I've been using Lightroom for a couple of months but only for processing as I didn't want to import into LR until I had some semblance of order but following a big effort I was rewarded with my images neatly filed so let LR loose on them. OK, I got it wrong first time as I elected to 'copy' rather than 'Add' (LR rightly complained when the SSD filled up) but got it right the second attempt. So why the subject title? I'm setting the keywords for over 32,000 images and it's possibly the most tedious task I've ever had to endure

    Merry Christmas everyone

    Cheers,
    John

...took me 3 mths, drove me crazy and nearly gave up, but I'm glad I didn't as its all done now and always add the meta data on import now

Have you tried using the "Spray Can" thats one easy way to quickly ad data, problem is you've still got to work out all the keywords you want to use

I have just under 19k photos and am in the same place as you. As I've put them in a folder structure that's not as problematic but it's still a pain to have to do it.

Out of interest, have you set LR to write the xmp sidecar files? Otherwise you'll lose it all if your catalog goes walkabout...

Ah, yes, I recall something about XMP sidecar files in Tim Grey's marathon video. So the box 'Automatically write changes into XMP' should be checked (it's presently not!)

          Cheers,

I think that's the one. I've not added any so far so haven't bothered. But may do now I've mentioned it...

              Been there, done that.

A tip going forward: when importing any new sets of photos, you can add keywords in bulk at the time of importing - this helps tremendously if you name your shoots or anything like that or if everything was taken in the same place and you want a key word such as "London", or if its the same person their name etc.

i am certainly glad I made the move to LR as it has really made me disciplined in the file structure and made photos easy to find.

My next task is now adding 1000s of developed photos prints by scanning them on and filing them within LR....but thats a project currently in the planning stage LOL.

                Re: Losing the will...

i have to really ask myself is it all worth it ,did a full back up the other night before upgrading to yosemite o.s and my lad mentioned to me that i had 5 years of photos backed up and asked if i was ever going to look at them again .to be quite frank the answer is probably no ,i have just under 5000 pics on flickr which i'll most likely never look at again either .so god knows how many could be shots are actually backed up .
i'm not the most organised of people either but have a very good retentive memory when needed and can usually go straight to something if needed .so is it worth all that effort ,only if its either treasured family pics or something sellable imho

theres that way of looking at it Jeff, but I assune you must have some birdie pics that you really tresure or maybe different breeds of birds - by using LR library with one click you could find all them along with the rating you've given them - I suppose its all about the ease of finding your tresured photos
