Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

I just read a comment by one of the old timers here " thanks lads" and it made me wonder, why we don't have many female members here?

I know women do like photography, although clearly need a helping hand from men to understand the cameras ... ( I'm running already ) but why do we only have a couple of female members?

I have noted that many of the local press photographers are WOMEN! This makes me veer to my second contention i.e they don't wish to dent men's egos!!!!!!

Re: Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

I know a couple of lady photographers, but neither are proper photography forum minded, both preferring Jeremy Kyle's waiting room (aka Facebook).

Most all forums that have an open 'board' (where the content is visible to both members and visitors), will have more lurkers than members, who know that there is such a thing as a 'free lunch'. That is to say they can take what they want from a forum, without having to contribute.

In the case of this forum, and any other forums that are hosted by a commercial enterprise, being 'open to all', serves as advertising.

Many 'lurkers', if they like what they see, perhaps eventually join, become magazine subscribers, or both. As is the case with many of us forum members here.

With my own forum, which is privately funded, visitors do not get to see the complete 'board'. They get to see just enough to give a good insight as to what we are all about, but that is all. If they want full access to the 'board', then they have to register as a member.

There are some photography forums (one in particular) that IMO, would likely put lady photographers off from joining. It has a significant percentage of "barrack-room lawyers", and '"would be politicians", who prefer contentiously discussing Politics and Religion etc, to photography. Most of the time with thinly disguised foul language.

However, in the time that I have been a member of the EOS forum, I have seen nothing that would deter ladies from joining.

Re: Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

Having run a few forums I know getting lurkers out of lurk mode is not easy and as you say most just like the free ride

Its odd that women don't seem to get involved with forums as I follow a couple on Flickr that are extremely good, and maybe its as you say Dave they prefer FB, but why? I find FB is all about likes in a similar way as flickr - so if they want a decent discussion why not join - I know at least one female member here that jumps and enjoys the discussions

Maybe she can offer some reason - or perhaps if we have a female lurker here she will jump in and give her viewpoint

Re: Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

Seems to me that most members on this forum are male because there are probably more amateur male photographers than female out there.... nothing else.

Certainly this forum has made me welcome and I,m happy to join in on comments etc, I never think my input is being taken as the"girlie" point of view.

              Don't worry lads, we're cool.

              PS...........I don't do FaceBook.

It would be interesting to find out what the percentage are as I don't see photography being a male hobby

And its always great getting your viewpoint Bo

Re: Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

Of the handful of photography tutorial days I have attended they are typically a 50/50 split between the sexes. However, it seems to me that most of those ladies are, dare I say, Nikon users! Perhaps this is the true reason Ian?

Surprised its a 50/50% so it leads me back to the question why they don't post here

I think Nikons are smaller build ?? maybe thats why

Cory is still a member here but she just doesn't 'do' forums or any of the social media stuff really, I nearly got her back in here a short while ago but alas - still trying.

Re: Thanks Lads ... wheres the girls

I only 'follow' one person on Flickr and I do because the images are local to me, of subjects I know and like, with my kind of processing and of a very, very high standard indeed - the photographer also happens to be a woman. She uses a Canon DSLR so may on this forum too but I've never seen her post.

                        Cheers,
                        John
