    Canon 100d

Having decided to go light weight from 5d2 gripped and "L's", there appears to be conflicting lenses. There are about 9 versions of the 18-55 and 4? of the 55-250. Advice please or alternative. A lesson I've learned as you get older, I had great kit but very heavy. The 100d looking at reviews and a couple of lenses will cover all I need today, thanks Richard W.

Graham, I use only one lens on my 100D and that Kens is the Tamron 18-250. It's a great walk around lens. I'm very pleased with it.

If you go to www.photozone.de you can compare the lenses you mention.
I use the Sigma 18-250mm on my 100D. Also, the Canon pancake lenses make an excellent match.

I have the IS STM versions of both lenses. They are the latest and appear to be the best according to all reviews. The STM motors are lightning fast and silent and the lenses are said to be better built than older versions. I wouldn't see any advantage in buying older ones. The 18 -55 is much cheaper if you buy it as a kit with the 100D e.g Wex Photographic have the kit at £329. That's only £50 for the lens as the body is £279 alone, but if you buy the lens separately they sell it for £169, so you save £119. You may get them cheaper elsewhere but the kit will always be much less costly.

I was a bit dubious about a "kit" lens at first, but the review at www.photozone.de convinced me, in terms of resolution they say "Most readers will probably look at the MTF/resolution charts in disbelief - and honestly so did we although the predecessor was impressive in this respect as well. The results are great and that's throughout the focal length range and at all relevant aperture settings." Good enough for me, and the charts they give make the point even more.

Graham, you are not the only one who is concerned about the weight of one's equipment as I have been affected by the age/weight factor for some years now. I have "downsized" my equipment and if you look at my signature the only real "heavy" items are my 6D, the two L lenses & the Tamron. However for holiday purposes I have my 100D + 40mm + 10-18mm & the 55-250mm with 1.4x tc. These you can see are quite light. The IQ of the lenses is brilliant.

Enjoy your purchase. Yes, the 55-250mm STM is quite light but superb image quality.. If you want a bit more reach go the new Kenko HD 1.4x TC and this is compatible with the 55-250mm lens.

Just taken delivery of a 100D with 18-55 STM lens, based on SOME of the comments on here. Hope those comments are borne out in my experience - watch this space.

First impression good, yes much smaller than my 5D2 and not as robust but the weight difference great !!!

                      Re: Canon 100d

It's perfect best bit of kit I've ever bought, light, so easy to handle, less complicated etc etc etc. Many times I never took 5D gripped out weight. 100d with kit and 55-250 a breeze, take it anywhere !!! BUY, not perfection compared with 5D mk11 BUT I wish I'd never bought one and "L's" the weight.
IS STM lenses great and will do the job for any amateur just a well, OK my opinion and yes not as robust but at the price a very very good buy.
Camera cost me new with,18-55, 55-250 lenses plus Canon hoods Hoya UV filters £460.00 UK not grey. Very Happy all round, OK kit won't last as long BUT will most ever take kit to it's limits ? Only Pros''
