    1DX Battery Charging

Why is it that every time I come to charge my 1DX battery I'm advised by the camera to calibrate it and then when I do it takes over 5 hours to charge! Why do you need to calibrate a battery???

you don't brian its just a advisory like on your m.o.t ,a leftover from the days when batteries developed memories.i calibrate mine about twice a year and its made no difference to performance

You might have a faulty battery. One of mine tells me to calibrate it all the time, even when it’s just been calibrated. That’s on the camera and the charger. It still seems to work OK though.

Thanks Jeff, I'll try calibrating it a couple of times a year.

I don't think the battery is faulty Ems because I got the same message on my old 1D3. It just didn't take quite so long to charge.

i suppose a lot really depends on usage ,mine on the 1D3 is in constant use so it automatically goes on charge at least 4 times a week ,as i said it doesn't seem to harm it in the least and i have yet to come home from a full day out without it still showing fully charged ,and that can be anywhere between 100 to 500 pics

Mine started to play up after less than a year with not much use. No problem with battery on my second body which has a similar amount of use. The Canon bloke I met yesterday (1dx Mk. 2 demo) just said don't worry about it.

It's different on the 1DX from yours Jeff, on the 1DX it's not necessarily about performance but it is a deep cycle, the 1DX has the facility to count down actual shots / life remaining and that is what the calibration is to do with resetting, so the camera can accurately tell you what's left shot / life wise by putting the battery back to optimal charge.

Having said that mine had only requested I recalibrate a battery once, and I have two, you will also find that pattern batteries do not have this facility.
