I was LAST (if I was lucky enough to get near the water) ... always the black sheep of the family.

        Re: Auto ISO

Pity you MX5! Mustn't be a naughty boy eh?

Anyway a serious question. Having learnt about the auto ISO only via this thread, I set my camera (550d) ,INSIDE MY BEDROOM ,on A ISO, with my 55mm-250mm lens, lens at 250mm and on TV 1/250, the reading was immediately ISO 800, & f 5.6 but the f 5.6 was blinking, and I had to retract my lens to say about 100mm, for the f5.6 to be stable. I thought with A ISO, the ISO would/should have increased to say 1600 to stabilise the f5.6,which did not happen. Why was that?

Nathaniel ... you need to check you haven't set the ISO limiter to ISO 800. (See p63 of you manual).

Quite right MX5 & thank you. I have sorted that out. Now coming to my 450d, the same exercise with the same lens, using a strong light source, moves the ISO to 800, although there is 1600 which can be input manually. But the maximum that the A ISO will go to is 800. I cannot see any limiter in the 450d manual. Any ideas?

Auto ISO on the Mk.IV does this.
