The good news is... Superman shoots Canon... beat that Nikon! ;-)
The bad new is... he's a bit more butter-fingered in real life than in the movies...
On September 2nd, a woman in Northern California named Debbie Payne heard a loud crash and, upon investigating, found a smashed Canon 24-105mm lens on the

$5000 of damage for a small hole in roof?
Sounds like another scam at that estimation.
I'd send that lens to Canon for repair.

How far would it have to fall to punch a hole like that?

I'll agree $5K does sound like trying it on, well depending on what it hit next. One suggestion was someone in a balloon, which I could see as a possibility.

The odds on hitting a house must be pretty low - does that mean a lot of lenses fall out of the sky that go unreported? Perhaps I should put something soft over my Garden?

Does look like the protector filter might have survived, not sure how good a job it did though...

He or she should have fitted a filter. A filter can save a lot of damage to a lens. I think that's a top tip from somewhere.
By the way this is my first post here so hello to all.
