A recent telephone conversation:
I am pleased to tell you that you have won an award from the recent public exhibition.
Oh, that’s very nice.
Can you come to Bournemouth to collect it next Wednesday?
Errr …….. Bournemouth is a rather long walk, couldn’t you post it?
It’s a bit big for the post and we would prefer you collect it in person at the award evening.
The background to this is that the Southern Area Photographic Association have a public exhibition in a large shopping Centre in Poole, Dorset. Fifteen clubs have an 8ft x 4ft exhibition board each and they can enter what they like, restricted to one shot per photographer. Apparently, the public vote for their favourite shots and that is how I ended up winning first prize.
I did think it was rather a long way to travel just to collect a certificate, but the lady was most insistent, so off I went. Well, it wasn’t quite what I expected, as there was a proper presentation with all the Association dignitaries present, a guest of honour to do the presentation and possibly the nicest trophy I have ever received. A life-size bronze of a Barn Owl, which was quite interesting, as my winning shot was of a Barn Owl. I suppose I shouldn’t assume, but much nicer to have low expectations and then be pleasantly surprised.
The Trophy
The Winning Shot
A few days after, I was at an event to see and play with the new Canon 1DX, when I came across one of our EOS members. He came second in the same event, but couldn’t make the award evening, but I’ll leave him to tell his own tale.
