Best Photo sharing Sites (Flickr, G+/Picasa etc.)

Any views on which is best?

I'm currently a Pro member of Flickr (probably my favourite) and also use Picasa and G+ (Like this for one off postings and seeing what other photographers create). I also like to use Facebook for non-serious stuff.

I do not like the confusion of having to use so many sites, but all have strengths and am going to try to concentrate on one going forward.

Flickr - Largest community, reasonably easy to use. No face tagging which I think is really useful.

Picasa / G+ Well I guess G+ is now Picasa. I find the social network landing page to be focussed and inspirational (providing you've linked photographers you like. Organisationally quite easy as well.

    Views welcomed...
    Regards

    Rory McCarthy

    Hmm. Should I have bought a 5D?

Also have a look at 500px, better quality photos imho than Flickr and none of the nasty comments that sometimes appear on Flickr.

The vast majority of photo-sharing is on Facebook, but it's not great for photographers. Flickr comes an almost infinitely distant second. It's a bit mind-blowing...

[QUOTE]The vast majority of photo-sharing is on Facebook/QUOTE]

A shocking statistic, although it is mostly likely to be an issue of volume v quality.

I use Phototopix (www.phototopix.co.uk) which is a good site for photo critique and forum support - from beginner to serious amateur/pro shooters so excellent advice and tips regularly posted.

For general forum sharing (car forums & the such) I use Photobucket. For my own photo's, the better ones anyway, go on Flickr.
I am thinking about my own website, there's a number of company's that offer build your own on-line gallerys & they are quite tempting.

Here's an experiment I did a while ago. I uploaded the same picture to both 800 pixels wide and about 200KB.

            Flickr -

            Test by Oggy20, on Flickr

            Photobucket -

The Flickr file is now 140KB and the Photobucket 84KB.

Depressingly, neither is anyway near the quality of the original.
            Cheers

            Oggie

Please feel free to critique or rework my pictures unless I ask otherwise.

            Oh Lord won't you buy me a 300mm F2.8L (or at a push, a 200-400 F4).

Re: Best Photo sharing Sites (Flickr, G+/Picasa etc.)

I use Photobucket for forum photos, as the size is so small I don't care too much. I wouldn't want to use it for sharing high-res stuff.

Smugmug - without a doubt one of the best out there, yes you have to pay BUT unlimited space / uploads - You can upload files up to 21mb each and you lose NO quality when you link images to forums etc, you choose the size you want to display / link keeping the originals backed up safely, very easy to use and if you like to play with CSS and HTML you customise it til your hearts content.

If you go 'Pro' then you get all the extra benefits inc watermarks / back ups and full customisation and of course 24/7 almost instant support. Yes they are in the states and setting up PayPal if you want to is a pain (I do have the script worked out for it now if anyone wants it) BUT after being with them for a few years now I don't think I would even bother looking anywhere else.

                .DAVID.

PS: 'just in case' any of you decide to go for it please PM me and I will give you a code for a discount - hey it's only a few quid off but every penny helps.

                  Thanks All.

Thanks to all for suggested alternatives.

Guess, I'm going to stick at moment with Flickr Pro, G+ and FB for social photos and see how it all pans out. Sometimes too much choice is a bad thing!

Nobody other than me has mentioned 500px have a look at the site it is worth it and they allow large photo uploads and their resizing leaves the images looking good. You can set up a free account and upload up to 20 photos per week, if you pay you can upload unlimited photos. There are other addons both free and paid like blogs and portfolios.

Nothing to do with them just a happy user.

Colin, I think Trev mentioned 500px a little while ago and I know that I also use it. It is great for getting ideas

Quite a few friends use a photoblog site called aminus3.com .
