Hello people, or should I say Friends!

Well the kids are getting older and i'm now wanting to get back to the wonderfull world of photography. Got myself a lovely 50D and I have loads of questions to ask. I am not new to the social activity, in the ninties using a medium format camera I gained the title of Amatuer Photographer of the Year through AP magazine, specialising in Night photography I have a wealth of knowledge on that area of photography to pass on to those who find it interesting.
On a limited budget I opted to re-enter the scene with the Canon 50D with the standard zoom and an 75-300 EF, The reason being a planned trip to Kenya later in the year. Though I really like lens I now realise it might not yeald the optimum results I desire. New to the Canon system I thought a 2x extender would help, and yes, as all you Canon experts are already aware it did not fit! So my current dilema is sell the extender of invest in the 70-200 L series lens. As it would be the f4 lens without IS I need to know if the combination works, the alternative could be a Sima 50-500 HSM or perhaps forget the telephoto route and go for the 100mm f2.8 macro. So lots of questions so now to find some answers...

Hi Apoy and welcome to the site and forums,

    Peter
There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don't be bitter because you can't record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is!

Welcome Apoy. Great to have more experience added to our numbers so get ready to answer questions :) I have tried a few different combinations of kit and settled for that shown in my profile. The most important being the last item. I am going to add a Kenko 1x4 extender to the 70-300L for when I need the extra reach due to its incompatibility with the Canon extenders. It's all personal choice at the end of the day but I hope that helps you. Graydon

Hi and welcome to the forum if you have questions then just ask.

I personally wouldn't go for the Sigma 50-500 as I feel the large zoom range (ten times) will result in too many compromises and lack in image quality. If you have the canon extender you may be better off swaping out the 75-300 lens for a 70-200 f4 L series which will give you better contrast and sharper images but if you do use it with the 2x extender you may well loose the autofocus and a little quality.

I personally went the same route that Gaydon has gone and purchased the 70-300L and the Kenko 1.4x extender.

The 100mm f2.8 macro lens is a cracking lens and very versatile

Hi Apoy and welcome to the forum, congratulations on you previous success with AP, look forward to seeing your images in the future, can't help with your lens dilema, but I have both the 70-200 f4L & the 100 2.8 L macro both fabulous lenses but I have yet to do them justice, (fairly new to digital photography)

Hi, thanks for your welcome comments. I am now the proud owner of a Canon 'L' series 100-300 IS lens, and what a beauty! I have been out practicing and the results are great, even when using the 2x extender. Because I am going to Kenya I have been trying some wildlife pictures, if it downloads ok then you can see the result (the dog!) on my home page.
