                  We were in Madeira recently & noticed a similar fashion for painting on the door - like this:

                      I remember a couple of years ago when the door art were painted in Madeira. This was all part of an art exhibition/competition. Originally there were plaques adjacent to the doors giving the title of the art and the artists name. Like those on Ian's link there were some very clever compositions on the doors.

                      Rather than post another thread with apologies to Ian and Russell for high jacking their post I remembered that I had previously started a thread which included some images of the painted doors in Madeira LINK
