    Can't say I really remember this far down the line but I did enjoy my Corgi cars and Triang trains. I also read a lot.

      Can’t recall playing with toys although mum and dad bought me a chemistry set - that was fun. I had a bike which I used to ride over the fields and around the Commons on. I spent great amount of time outdoors, birds nesting, building dens, and watching wildlife — I’ve never grown up I suppose

            I remember that I liked to do something instead of playing with toys, so my favourites are:
            Bike (and still I like it):
            roller-skates;
            skates;
            skis

                        I think that Trev and myself lived an identical childhood mainly because my parents couldn’t afford many toys, but I had freedom.

                          So so true David. I learnt so much about wildlife during my childhood. I can remember being somewhat bullied in my younger days because I spent time out photographing birds - now its the 'in thing' everybody's doing it.
                          A few years back I was giving a talk on badgers to a local Natural History Group in Sidmouth. At the end during a questions period, I was asked by a member of the audience how I gained my knowledge and interest in my subject. I explained it started as a childhood thing spending my play time in the countryside. There was an elderly gentleman sitting in the front row who just sat tight after everyone left and I was packing up my projection equipment. He eventually came over to me and said ' You told us a lie, I know how you gained your knowledge, by skipping off school - playing truant' It was my old geography teacher, who I had not seen for the best part of fifty years. His family eventually invited me to his 100th Birthday party. The sad thing was, what he said was true!!!

                            A bike
                            my first fishing rod which was more of a toy than a real one, but it worked
                            Triang train set
                            We used to make a lot of our stuff, my Dad made us trollies and sledges, even a working Ballista that was supposed to have fired tennis balls, but it threw quite large rocks a fair distance.
                            Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
