    Owls in flight

Went to a local falconry centre recently as a day out and to see how the new R6 performs at taking BIF. I appreciate that pics of captive birds in flight is not considered appropriate here but they do show how good the R6M2 is. I have intentionally photoshopped out the jessies on both pics. There are other pics that I could post but the jessies are very apparent and too tricky to edit out.

This barn owl was being flown between two handlers. BIF is not something I do very much of at all so it was very much a learning session, latter shots are quite an improvement on the first ones; panning and following takes practice. Not all the shots were a success of course but the success rate was high.

Both these were taken with the mechanical shutter on the H+ setting at 12 FPS using the EF100-400. Shutter speed was 1/3200sec, f5.6, ISO 500. The AF was set to detect animals (which includes birds)

I think you managed very well with these. Birds in Flight are probably my biggest photographic weakness, I've lost count of the number of failed attempts to get a decent image, be it at an event such as this or in the wild.

I'm not sure on how correct your thoughts on images such as this not being appropriate to this forum. This IMO is a "photography" forum and there shouldn't be a restriction on this type of photography. Plus you are describing your experience using a Canon camera with camera features that are designed for the type/subject matter you were photographing and you also have described which features/settings you were using on the day.

Last week I attended an outing of a friends photography club to a falconry centre, it was an interesting day out. But as usual I had more BIF images that are destined for the bin than keepers. However my 5D1v doesn't have the latest tracking features of its more modern siblings.

I like both pics, lovely birds.
thank you for sharing your experience and settings.
I struggle most times with stationary birds and have not had much luck with BIF.
