Re: Hood on wide angle lens?

Although I don't have a hood for my WA (must get one) in general it's better to use a hood on all lenses as it helps prevent light scattering around inside the lens and reducing contrast.

You could try a Rubber lens hood, these can be used fully out or ½ way out in case of vignetting.

Re: Hood on wide angle lens?

Different lenses vignette to more or less different extents, and it all depends on both the lens and the body you use it on. Using the right good will reduce flare and increase contrast when shooting against or 'across' the light, but only stopping-down, or using a software lens profile like in DPP/LR (or of-course in-camera on newer bodies) will sort it out.
The worst I have come across is shooting at f/1.2 with the 50mm on FF. Whether or not it has 'artistic' merit for portraits is a matter of debate ;)

Perhaps my comment re LR wasn't that clear. All lenses will exhibit some fall off towards the corners and the LR profile will help correct this. As you say not to be mistaken with lens hood issues.

I always use a hood no matter what the weather. Mainly to stop damaging the front of lens, a much cheaper replacement!

I have a Sigma 10-20 and never seen a vignette when using their hood.

Hi Nat - sorry I missed this posting. With the Canon 16-35 there is only one way to put the hood on. I don't know your WA lens but I would assume the hood will have the manufactures name on it and in most cases that should be on the top of the lens

My W/A is also used on a FF camera and even when closed down I have no issues..

              .
agree especially when you consider the front element - that hood can protect it from a lot and not just flares

Re: Hood on wide angle lens?

Thanks Ian. That is a good point re the manufacturer's name. I do use the lens hood on all my other lenses but it is only with my Sigma 15-30mm (Percursor to the Sigma 12-24mm lens) that I seem to have this problem of vignetting. Not really a big issue for me as I know how to get rid of it.

No problem Nathaniel. We are all here to learn. I have the Canon EFS 10-18mm. And I have bought it with the original hood for this lens
