Re: Going from 7D to 6D ... good move?

I noticed on another forum, that some have concerns about the control wheel on the 6D. Hope it's OK to link to the discussion over there?

Great spot Andy. I just sold my pool cue for 1k so was soooo close to ordering one.

Sorry I badly worded that. Guesty was correct, I meant increases bokeh/reduces DoF. Therefore the 2 (usual) reasons to want the heavier, more expensive, faster glass are mitigated by the 6D's much better ISO handling and the physical difference in size between the sensor and it's effect on the spread of the captured image through a same sized aperture. Is that better?

That's not good is it? I meant me having to join another forum to see a picture!

I'm away with work so can't check mine for a week or two but I can't say I've noticed that.

Certainly not of the standard Canon are known for. Although, when I opened my lens, I was surprised how little there was to it. Amazing engineering right enough.

Re: Going from 7D to 6D ... good move?

Wow! I turn my back for half a second and so many replies!

There are so many things to think about and consider.

              --- Weather Sealing:
Most worrying was the weather sealing.

The latest on this issue is that it isn’t a problem.

To save you following the link the guy takes his 6D apart and examines the sealing and wheel. Conclusion – it’s okay.

              Phew.

              --- Anecdotal vs. Hands-on:
When I was on the Olympus side of the house, one great thing about the forums was the get-togethers: there was also a group specifically aimed at meeting up and sharing kit.

Nothing beats hands-on experience, and for my experience with the 6D I thank Chris again!

--- Lenses, focusing and in use
Everyone is different, with different photographic needs and, though still not an expert, I know that there will have to be compromise (at least while my wife is watching)

So my rugged* 7D takes a back seat for now, and if I can afford to keep it, it will be for when I go to the more sporty events where my 70-300L and plenty of light will get the best out of the fantastic focusing system.

*It and me got a real drenching at Hardraw Force a couple of years ago and it didn't skip a click.

The 6D, as I said, will be more for Landscapes. I plan to get a 16-35L F2.8 after a little while trying it with my 24-105L (equivalent I believe to my 15-85 on my 7D).

So I think I have a good range of glass suited for my humble use:

              EF-50 F1.8, EF-16-35 L F2.8 (when the wife’s not looking) EF-24-105L F4, EF-70-300L and EF-100mm Macro

I was very tempted by the Sigma 12-24mm DG

I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze a little bokeh out of it somehow.

              --- Taking the Plunge
Well I have ordered a 6D, which should be here tomorrow.

              ---Nathaniel
Hope you enjoy yours when you get it. I think it’s a nice camera. Will let you know how I get on

Re: Going from 7D to 6D ... good move?

I've had another side by side play today. Weight difference ... not noticeable. Build - to be honest as I flipped flaps and opened things ... its marginal in the 5D3's favour ... which Canon give the coveted 'Weatherproofed' label. BUT ... I think its the smaller size of the 6D that might make you think at first handling that it isn't as well built as the 5D3 (as it did with me) ... but after a second session and its a far harder call.

If built-in GPS/WiFi is for you ... no contest (6D). It a comprehensive AF is for you ... no contest (5D3).

Me ... well I'm inclined towards the 5D3 as I think it would make a better replacement for my 7D (which would probably get PX'd).

But handle both and see what you think.

I must admit that I had a play with a 5D3 at LHR last week and didn't think there was a massive difference in build quality, that was noticeable anyway, but didn't post anything as I thought I'd just sound like a 6D fanboy (which I am! ) with sour grapes.

As I always use a rain/water cover on my camera and lenses, this is not a problem at all for me. Thanks for the uplift Graydon.
