    5D3 and Memory Cards

OK you 5D3 owners need some info/advice re memory cards.

As I knew the camera can take both CF and SD cards thought I'd do a bit of research on cards and speeds. Got to say my brain is hurting now!!

Most interesting thing I've read (can't comment on accuracy) is that the camera will default to the slowest card inserted and being used with implication that SD are slower than CF. Thinks that's right and I've explained it correctly.

Apparently for continuous burst SD can limit speed and some people say don't insert or don't directly write to SD.

Seem some people only use SD as an in camera route to back up the images on the CF card and then reformat the CF card. Others have camera set to save RAW to CF and JPEG to SD.

Anyone want to comment? Think I'll go for a beer and wait for some info from others!!

    Yes, that is correct.

We ran an article on this in the July-September 2012 issue of EOS magazine, page 76.

      Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

Hmm I've never heard that one. I use the 400X UDMA 7 cards I bought for my 7D and I have a class10 SD card too. I never use them at the same time because you end up with double the data on import and I don't see the point in shooting RAW and JPG.

There's an old term in computing though. You're only as fast as your slowest component so maybe that rings true here too. Never experienced a slow down with the 5D3. Had terrible slowness on the 1D3 though.

Well it's interesting seems to me that shooting RAW to CF seems best option.

Then maybe when travelling use the in camera transfer to SD as a storage solution.

As a matter of interest what's the size of RAW files on 5D3?

Yep, was certainly case in computing, at one time mixing memory modules meant speed was limited to slowest and 2 drives on one ribbon cable meant slowest would limit data speed.

          Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

There was sort of a conversation on memory cards in the 5D Mark III here...

As Paul has said you will be constrained by the slowest part of the system, so buying very cheap and slow memory cards will be a bottle neck, although maybe mainly an issue during burst shooting or fast shooting.

In a friends 5D Mark II I've seen buffering occur when saving images due to a slow card, it can take a few seconds to make an image available to view after shooting.
To prevent any buffering issues I decided to go for fast cards, my SD are 95MB/s and my CF are 160MB/s.
Maybe those speeds are higher than needed, but I am pleased with performance and don't get any buffering delays.

I use both cards to record the same image, and treat the CF as a backup which only gets formatted after I've verified the SD card images have transferred ok and without issue.
I use the SD card to transfer as I can use the SD card slot on my iMac, I appreciate the CF may be quicker but don't want an external card reader at the moment.

In use I've seen no speed issues or concerns. Currently I shoot in RAW+JPG, but am going to switch to just RAW as I mainly just end up deleting the JPG's as unwanted anyway, and I can create JPG's from RAW easily enough.
The file sizes of my RAW tend to be 24-29MB from what I can see of a quick look through some recent files.

            Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

Thanks for comments. Done a raft more reading and does seem that SD slot is limited in speed (apparently max is 20mb/sec) and under certain circumstances this can cause a slow down of writing of files, when writing to both cards i.e. RAW to CF and JPEG to SD.

Lots of discussion on this topic on the web and I'm guessing for a lot of users this won't be an issue.

              Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

This is all new to me, bought the 5dmk3 in Sept last year and used my Sandisk 8gb 60mb/s cards and have not been affected with buffering whilst in USA I bought a Sandisk 16gb 95mb/s card as I thought this would be better with faster write speed if ever I used video, as for the camera defaulting to the slowest card (which I did not know) I always set my camera to record to the CF card first and auto switch when full

That's interesting Alan. Think you'll find that unless you're writing to both at same time and have filled/got close to filling the buffer this shouldn't be an issue, I'm happy to be corrected on this if its not accurate.

Seem to recall reading that auto switch to SD doesn't rest if you remove the CF card so recording is then SD first, might have crossed over some info there so again please correct me if wrong.

I always shoot in Raw and never write to both cards at the same time and after removing the CF card and loading them on to my PC i insert the card into the camera format it and switch it back to be the first card to be written to

Think my way forward (once I get my 5D3) will be to write to CF and only use the in camera copy to SD for travelling as I have quite a few SD cards.

                      Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

Just done a quick test using cf card and a sd card then both together in camera.

Lexar Pro 800x CF Card 17 frames before it stopped, SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB SD Card 15 frames till stopped, both cards in camera and it still managed 17 frames but it slowed right down on the final 3frames.
                      Hope that helped in someway???

Think your quick test probably confirms that for most users it should be an issue.

                          Re: 5D3 and Memory Cards

I only ever use CF cards in my 5D3, for the very reason stated above.

Yep, SD cards are cheaper, but having paid the price of a new 5D3, I'm happy to provide it with the faster CF cards.

Otherwise, its a bit like buying a Ferrari, and putting 2 Star petrol in it.
