Have you considered a monopod Dave? I've "only ;o(" got a 7d but use a 70-200 with a 1.4 converter and find that gets pretty heavy by the end of the day and I'm thinking about buying a monopod, plus a handy walking stick ;o)

I have a monopod and haven't really used it that much so far. Might be dusted off if I find new kit a bit heavy.

I advise, get it right out the box, fire a lens on it, go out into the wild with nothing but a pair of slacks and a fleece and hunt down the wild. Return with a full card, and a few scrapes on the body and a ding out the rubber focus grip on the lens for luck.

Great way to get over new gear fear lol.

That was my approach with the 1D3 and 400mm. Best time of my photographic life so far. Just out rolling about in the bushes and not caring about where I left the camera and lens. I rested it on rusty fences, wet grass and all sorts. This time around it's been a bit less rough. Sit's in the bag all the time and too scared to leave it lying about. Even took the strap off it so no one knows it's a 5D3. A lot of money for what it is really.

Strap first thing to go as its rubbish anyway. Will be replaced with something that distributes weight a bit better.

Suspect its cosset life will only last so long like my other kit, having said that still take reasonable care. Will get used and abused a bit as I think there's no point getting something like this if you ain't going to use it.

I carried mine all day on my OpTech utility sling strap and never noticed the weight of camera and lens, that was varying between my 70-200mm f2.8 and 24-105mm lenses.
Definitely would not use the basic strap supplied.

I have carried my 6D with the 70-200mm +1.4TC and then changed lenses to insert my 24-105m lens with no problems. Of course I changed my neck strap for the Op-tec one as soon as I got my camera. So go for it!!

P.s forgot to mention that I change my lenses in my car boot- never carried two lenses with me whilst walking.

I do have monopod, but haven't used it that much. but I reckon it will have to go on any field trips with the 5D3/400mm/1.4x TC set up, as holding it up in the shooting position for any length of time, would be arm aching.

Up to now, I have only used it with a tripod and gimbal head, but that's hardly a portable setup.

I might look into these OpTech straps.

So which is the best for the 5D3 + heavy zoom combo, the Utility or Pro?

I orginally had the OpTech pro Loop strap which is good, but is now use the OpTech utility strap which I prefer. The beauty is that with the OpTech connectors I can swap between them without any hassle or issues.
I also use the OpTech wrist strap which is great and prevents me dropping it accidentally when working at home or in a situation where I am not using the utility/neck straps.

I've used the utility strap with my 70-200mm on and it's ok. For larger lenses or if you want extra security you can add a second connection.

Spend the next week while you are waiting for the "arrival" on You Tube watching the Canon 5D Mkiii videos. It will be time well spent

cheers David - I got the 16-35F4L as well as I needed a decent wide angle, so should be fun playing with both

I've already bookmarked a few but last week joined Lynda.com for a month as there was a video I wanted to watch on Landscape work - but I've just seen a good video by a guy called Ben Long that only 5 hrs long ;o) and I do like his videos
