... or you could get shorter lens - like a 200f2.8 on the 1.6 crop instead of the 300F2.8 on a 5D

I dont find the weight a problem. As I have a 70-200F2.8 for the other 7d I reckon a 300 is too close - especially as I can put an extender on the 70-200 (or use the 70-300L if the light is good)
You must be superman Brian to not find the weight of the 400 2.8 a problem! Unless you are using a gimbal... It is one of the best lens Canon make But one of the Telephoto along with the 600 f4 that I was unable to use due to weight..

I carry it around all day without difficulty - it is not that heavy :)

No monopod or tripod - just hold it like a rifle. It is lovely to use and the IQ is fantastic (mind you so is the IQ from the new 70-200 F/2.8 II when strapped to a 5dII)

Re: Clear out time - Your thoughts?

To answer the original question - 7D sounds a good idea. Also the "magnification" you get over a 5D2/1Ds3 is 1.5x not 1.6x (long story) but more over a 1D3, ((5184/22.3)/(3888/28.1)) = 1.68x. (Only counts if you can resolve to the pixels though.)

                  Thanks Jon - I think

In my mind I think this is the road I will go down.
I had a play with one today and have to admit to being more than a wee bit tempted.
Just need to sell the 1D3 first though.

                  Thanks for your valued input

Re: Clear out time - Your thoughts?

This lens weight is 11.8 Pounds That is heavy mate even more than my 800mm which is hand holdable for short periods.. 6 people out of 10 may be able to do that..

But... I do not think this is hand hold able for 9 out of 10 people unless they are hod carriers or Coal merchants! Good for you Brian I have a new super Hero.. The point I make that super telephoto lens like the 400 and 600 in the mark 1 series are too heavy to hand hold for most people.. And why the new Mk 11 versions are remarkable as they are! 28% less weight.. Down to the 500f4 weight at worst
