So I took the plunge! 24-70mm f2.8L II

I'd been considering upgrading from my 24-105L (which I loved!) to the 24-70mm f/2.8L II for quite a while now and the price has been steadily dropping over the past few months. Then this weekend WEX here in the UK had an offer on of an extra 10% off for three days which made it £1260! It was too good an offer to resist so I got it yesterday. After doing a few test shots all I can say is WOW! This lens is incredible! Accurate focusing with no MA required on my 1D4 or 5D3, extremely sharp with excellent colour and contrast wide open and it's very well built. The zoom ring is a little tight, but no doubt it'll loosen a bit over time, it's not something that bothers me. You've probably heard all this before, but I just wanted have my say about it!. I just wish the weather here in the UK was better or I would have been out and about with it.

That'll be a beast if it ever materialises! I'd like to see a new 300mm f4.0L IS. Going off topic a bit even though I started the thread, I see you have the new 100-400 MkII, is it as good as everyone says it is?

Thanks! I may be tempted once the price comes down then!

I've been thinking that the 24-70 would be a good compliment to my 70-200. Just need to save up the pennies!
Although, I do like my 24-105 for its range and versatility.

It's nice to hear that you are enjoying your 24-70mm f/2.8L II. I understand that there were minor criticisms about lack of image stabilisation. I'd be interested to know if you feel this is an issue?

I have the Canon 24-70 f2.8 Mk2 up for sale in the classifieds. Im open to offers considering the drop in price Wex have just made. It is in excellent condition - I'm in Isle to f Harris at the moment but will be advertising elsewhere on my return on Saturday.

My previous standard zoom was the 24-105mm f/4.0L IS so when I decided to upgrade to the 24-70mm f/2.8L II I thought I would miss IS. You know what, I haven't missed it at all! IS can be invaluable particularly on telephoto lenses, but on shorter focal lengths, although nice to have, it isn't essential. For me anyway that is.

Having had the lens now for a few months I'm delighted with its capabilities and image quality. So much so I've decided to sell my 24L II and 50L as they haven't seen the light of day since!
