    Re: IS or not?

Well chaps I'm blown away with all the quick replies. You've said all the things I have been saying to myself. IF I can afford it (or IF as Ian says she lets me afford it) then go for the IS version. Paul L's reply is interesting as he is a guy that uses long lenses a lot and posts some stunners.
I think that I need to hold the IS and non IS version to see what the difference actually feels like. Based on that I'll make my choice.

    Thanks again
    Alan.

I don't know about the f2.8 non against the IS but certainly there is little difference in weight between the f4 IS and non IS - both quite light

        Hey buddy,

You are more than welcome to nip round and try my 2.8 IS mkII with and without the 1.4 extender. It's my normal go to / all weather / every possible situation set up and I would not be without it, 8 > 10 hours a day handholding on the 1DX is a piece of cake - honestly. 99% of all my racing is done with it and the 1.4.

Cheers mate, top bloke. I may well take you up on that offer. Would an extended trial of say, 5 years be agreeable

Bad timing tomorrow mate. I've a stag do starting early doors tomorrow and won't be able to walk straight let alone hold a camera

                    Re: IS or not?

I can't comment on the lenses in question, but I recently upgraded from a non IS Sigma EX 105 f/2.8 macro, to the newer IS one, and can say the IS version is a much more versatile lens, making hand-held shots much easier.

                        Re: IS or not?

I'm probably not the best person for advice on IS as i try to shoot at a decent shutter speed when covering sport so never really need IS turned on,and on the occasions where i do go a bit slower, say panning IS still isn't going to really help.

That said i would still buy the best and latest lens i could afford.

FWIW having acquired 3 tele-zooms with IS over the last year or two, and being hugely pleased with the improvement in hit rate sharpness wise, I wouldn't normally now buy a long lens without it. I've never had the steadiest hold and I'm not a great fan of tripods unless absolutely unavoidable so for me IS is a boon.

For years I have been happy without IS on my EF 400mm f5.6L and even now I don't always use it on the Sigma as higher shutter speeds are pretty mandatory with birds and other small wildlife.
