Quite. So adding info to a posting might help others see where one was coming from

My opinion is that photos can be a bit like food in as much as what pleases one person doesn,t please another. I personally dont like landscapes or macro and as such don,t feel I have the experience or knowledge to comment on these subjects, however when a photograph appears that I like I will give praise but will remain silent on ones I don,t.

I'm too "gobby" just look at the number of posts.

We all like different things, or else we'd all have the same cars, houses and furnishings. Because of this I do try and say if I "like" a photo, even if I can't/won't offer any technical help as I don't feel qualified.

Granted I'll tell you if your horizon is off, but recenly I've seen some photos where the horizon is practically at 45 degrees and meant to be like that, so I'm beginning to keep stum on that as well.

That said I do appreciate the constructive help. I think/hope that my photography as improved while I've been here.

A lot of valid points. I cherry pick as to what I look at, usually areas that I'm hoping to improve myself. As far as voicing my opinions about a photograph I find it very difficult to say 'sorry but....' when all other comments are saying well done. In general I feel a little more constructive comments could be made. As mostly we post to gain further advise on how to take our images to the next level.

Some are novice or fairly new to the forum and probably feeling their way but there are others who from the quality of their shots are obviously experienced photographers. Surely if you have time to post a shot then you should make time to comments as well.

I think if you post an image for comment then it is only fair that you return the compliment, even if it's just "I like it" or " I don't like it".

Many replies to this thread state they are not qualified to comment or unable to give constructive criticism as it's not a genre that they specialise in or not a genre of their taste. What a load of tosh.
I do not like mono images because I think they are .. (whatever reason) but there are many great images that are presented in mono and I will say it's a great image. What I do like is how the image was taken, framed and presented whatever the genre or colour/mono.
John27 said "I'm also careful not to dishearten someone"; I think that is so, so important. We all need encouragement and we all were beginners at some stage and some of us are still learning.

I do however try to look at "every" thread (I occasionally miss one or two) and try to comment on most of them even if it's just "great colours", "I like that", "superb image".
What I do not like seeing is 217 views and no comments.

This is by far the best photographic forum I've been a member of and long may it remain so.

Well stated Stephen, I've refrained from commenting on this subject, as I have made my feelings known about this topic in other threads which are similar to what you just said.

Yes and No Stephen. Just to add I will comment on 'genres' I no nowt about and will actually sometimes post images that are outside my comfort zone. But I usually state that. Which brings me to an important point ... the OP can help by stating their intent. I go back to my example of slanting OOF et seq images I've seen when this has been done in the interest of art. As I don't do art my only constructive comment would be I don't like or it doesn't rock my boat. So yes comment freely and honestly but with a justification or an explanation (I'm as guilty as others in not fully qualifying my response so as my senior management says I should eat my own dog food).

that is just the point i was originally making. The majority of those who have replied to this thread are either those who already post their own shots and comment on others or they get involved with the forum by offering help and advice but dont necessarily post many of their own shots. I have no issue with either but there are a small minority of members, obviously talented photographers, who seem to find the time to post their own work but then cant be bothered to give feedback on other members shots or in some cases even acknowledge by saying thank you when they receivefeedback on their own. It happens to an extent on other forums i visit and I do the same there as here, irrespective as to how wow a shot may be I just ignore it
