    Re: Flickr experiment, the results.

An interesting insight into the way you use Flickr Jeff, and from you previous comments it has obviously worked to your advantage. Both in terms of contacts, and financially. So all credit to you for that.

For me, I have no aspirations with my photography, with regards to financial gain, or recognition, but respect those who succeed with this.

I'm just an enthusiastic amateur of average ability, who enjoys the challenge of enhancing his skills and knowledge of photography, and forums, especially this one are a great asset in this respect.

What I enjoy most, is being among like-minded and friendly people, being able to offer constructive advice where I can, and to receive the same from others.

That's what I enjoyed most about the camera club that I belonged to, until it was taken over by the competition fanatics, when I and others left.

I saw Flickr as perhaps being an extension of forums like this one, and by creating or joining a group that was relative to my local area, would be more of a local photographic community, so to speak.

However, I found Flickr groups to be very insular, sterile, and no more than a photo exhibition board. At least those related to my part of the country are.

Where there are comments made, they are almost universally 'back-patting one liners', like "great image" with no reason as to why they think that.

Last night I did comment on one of the images posted by the new lady member, that I referred to earlier in this 'thread'. I took the time to say why I liked the shot, and added suggestion of as to what I thought would improve one area of the shot. She was really appreciative, and I think somewhat surprised at, 1. getting a response, and 2. having a response that said something more than "nice image". From what I have seen, something totally out of character on Flickr.

BTW, I later had a look at her own Flickr site, and it very evident that her main interest was wildlife photography, with some nice examples of her work.

I would have invited her over here, but she is a Nikon user.

dave like you at my tender age i seek neither fame nor fortune ,i can keep my head above water "just" about on my pensions .anything else is a bonus .it was just a insight into how it was and what can be done .i have not had a explore btw since i sent the CEO of flickr a p.m telling her what i thought of her in full cockney terms and phrases over the changes she had forced on us ,i also stopped my "pro" membership in protest at the same time .

it can be hard work on there at times but i got nowt better to do .

I never thought you intended it any other way Jeff.

The recognition and renumeration would not have been forthcoming, had it not been well justified, so credit where credit is due mate.

BTW, for what its actually worth to me, for the use I make of it, I get Pro membership as part of my Broadband package.

I'm not sure Ian, as I've only ever had a Pro account, because it came as a 'freebie'.

As a guess, I would say it relates to the amount of storage spece you get.

                  it seems

                  Pro accounts:
Are no longer available for new subscribers or people who let their Pro subscription expire.
so you better not let it slip Dave you could be our only Pro user

you used to need a pro account if you wanted to avoid daily/ weekly upload restrictions and total space but when flickr was updated a while ago they did away with those restrictions for everybody. My account is still pro only because i was worried that if i stopped paying i would lose all my photos and its only about $6 a quarter

Still flying solo Dave. My brother has a camera but not as enthused as I am which is a real shame.

I also like my fishing and my fishing mate always asks me to go which makes me want to go. So much more enjoyable when there is someone to chat to and share the thrill (or not) of the day. If only he would take up his camera again!

Anyhow, back to your original post. I use Flickr but to be honest mainly to enable me to post images here. I flirted with Photobucket in the early days but found the quality when posting was not as good as Flickr.

I follow over a 100 people but rarely comment, saving that for two chaps I have become 'cyber mates' with. Some of my pics have been asked to join particular groups which I don't mind. And to be honest i do get a bit of a lift when the favs and likes count up.

Also like fishing Alan, in fact have done since I was kid, but for some really un-explicable reason. the gear never came out once this year.

Don't know why, but the enthusiasm wasn't there. Maybe next year I'll pick up where I left off.

Pity you are 50+ miles down the road, as I'm sure we could have got together for few trips out. Living in 'Constable Country' up here, there's no shortage of good landscapes, or wildlife.
