Having said that, I wonder if I read your post right, but this would strongly surprise me.

Some UK schools had (have?) some very bad teachers (just like my profession, IT, where we have more than our fair share of bad staff). So I was unlucky and the English lessons consisted not of learning the correct way to use the language ... but the teacher telling stories about the war (years later I discovered he was an army warehouse person and never left England). So I missed out on being taught English. But somehow I managed to pass the English O-Level exam required for entry to University. I walk with a chap who is a translator and speaks/writes a dozen languages including Dutch.
