    Hello everyone

    Hello everyone.

I've just joined the forum as I hope to get some tips & useful advice as I start what I hope will be a fruitful journey into the EOS world.

I've been using a Lumix TZ40 for several years and have been pleased with some of the results (mainly birding, some motor sports & air shows) that can be got from a camera that will fit into my pocket but recently I started to get a bit frustrated with its limitations, so it was definitely time for a move to a DSLR.

I've just bought a 750D with 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses. I did blow my original budget even with that little lot but I expect to see myself upgrading over the coming years. Of course, budgets are only ever there to be broken anyway, aren't they?!

I am going to book myself onto a photography course so I can learn some theory, put it into practice and ultimately get the most out of the camera.

I am looking forward to reading through the forum and starting my ascent up the steep bit of the learning curve.

    Cheers
    Chris

      Re: Hello everyone

      Welcome Chris

This is a good place to come for help and advice. I'd been a 'serious amateur' film photographer for years but it was only when I bought a DSLR and joined here that my standard really improved - I still have a long way to go to reach many of our fellow members but trying is fun.

Best advice to start you off with is to buy a guide to your specific camera to learn the controls and settings (the one that came with the camera will be rubbish!). Then practice with different settings and analyse the results to understand the effects they have - be critical with yourself! One reason my standard (and I'm sure this will be true of others too) has seen such an improvement since going digital is that the high cost of film and processing is removed making experimentation free.

You will probably find that the out-of-camera (OOC) results are disappointing and that's because a RAW digital image (always shoot in RAW by the way) is just a data set that you will be expected to process and even just a little sharpening with adjustment to the highlights and shadows will be a revelation - initially use Canon's DPP (free and you should have had a disc with the camera but download the latest version from Canon) before giving consideration to Adobe Lightroom at a later date.

So it's that simple: practice, ask questions and upload your work (via Flickr, not direct). While on Flickr do a search for images shot with your camera to see just what can be achieved and what to strive for.

      Good luck

      Cheers,
      John
