BTW allegedly a lot of cameras are sold in the UK (assuming the shop and internet prices are similar) at around a 4-5% margin (so maybe £40 on a £1000 camera). This sounds really thin, except what is very hard to find out is how much of a kick-back the dealers get for hitting sales targets, which can make a huge difference. (I remember buying a car radio from a specialist shop, at around dealer cost, as they got about £3K for hitting their target, had less than two weeks to go and were quite a bit under where they needed to be. They would make less than a grand on the radios they needed to sell in that time at their target margin.)

That's it, the 'deed is done', and I'll be picking up a new 5D MkIII tomorrow

Had to move fairly quick as quite a few retailers are running out of the free BG-E11 battery grip, the promotion for which ended on the 31st September, and of course the free Lightroom 5 and Premier elements 12 software offer, ends at the end of the month.

Albeit I don't need any of them, as I have no need of the battery grip, already have LR5, and do all my video editing in Sony Vegas.

However, never being one to turn down a 'freebie', especially a £249 Canon battery grip, which I could probably sell on, at a 'knock down' price, and probably the same with the LR5.

The 7D, well that's now up for sale on two other forums.

Oh yes, against my better judgement I decided to 'bite the bullet' and pay the Canon UK price, as opposed to 'going grey'.

Congratulations on your purchase Dave and a free battery grip to boot! If you're as excited as I was buying mine, it'll be a long wait until tomorrow.

              And the software Andy!!

I've got a 40 mile drive to collect the camera, but prefer to do this than have it posted.

As I said I really won't be using the 'grip', as the camera plus my 24-105L will be chunky enough without adding the grip to it, so I will be looking to sell that on.

I'd hold off selling it, until your certain you'll never need it. I recall seeing a thread on another forum, where the guy was just about kicking himself for parting with his grip.

The EOS 7D has been sold, and I now have a nice new 5D MkIII to play with, and it did come with a BG-E11 Battery Grip (in a separate box), plus Adobe Lightroom 5 and Adobe Premier Elements 11.

Andy, I hear what you say about keeping the 'grip', but I really can't see me using it, and I will likely sell it on, along with the software, which I already have.

Have also sold my Sigma 10-20mm EX DC lens, as it's designed for use with APS-C cameras, and as such no good for use with the 5D. However, my 24-105L will now give a true 24mm on the 5D, whereas it became 38mm on the 7D.

                      Re: 7D v 5D Mlll

Sorry, but the 7D was sold this morning, to someone outside of this forum.

It was just 16 months old, in mint condition, with a shutter count of just 756 actuations.

I should have kept it really, but I know that now having the 5D MkIII, the 7D would have taken a 'back seat' and rarely been used, which would have been a shame.

                        Re: 7D v 5D Mlll

Just come across this thread and have found it very interesting. I have a question which quite possibly has an obvious answer but here goes:

I have a 7D and mostly shoot wildlife using a 70 - 200mm f2.8L IS 11 lens. A lot of my subjects aren't very co-operative and keep their distance so quite often I crop quite drastically. How would the IQ be affected taking a distant shot with a 5D Mk111 and cropping it to the same size image as I would for my 7D?

I read a very interesting comparison of the 7D vs cropping in on a 20MP 6D, and the 6D won hands down at any ISO above 400 and matched the 7D at lower ISO.

I'll see if I can find the link and post it.

Here's the link, scroll down towards the end of the review where they compare the 5D, 6D, A99.

                            Hi Dave

There is a significant difference in resolution between the APS-C sensor and the Full Frame sensor in the 5D, which to my way of thinking would allow you to crop the 5D image significantly and then expand it quite a bit without loss of resolution (becoming pixelated).

That said, having only had the 5D since this morning, I've not had the chance to explore its capabilities, but I'm sure someone will come along with a definitive answer to your question.

BTW, as one of our members here lost out on buying my 'mint' 756 shutter actuations 7D, which I sold elsewhere this morning, I will mention that the BG_E11 Battery Grip that came with the new 5D Mklll today, is now advertised on other forums.

Thanks SJP a very interesting article.

In real life I wonder whether any one on the Forum has cropped a 5D image to the equivalent of a 7D's 1200 x 800 or even less and what the IQ looks like. Mind you its beyond me how you calculate the equivalent - but there must be a man/lady who does
