    Paul,
a Black Rapid is the way to go. Same lens as you, on a 7D like you, Black Rapid strap absolutely no problem at all and it does not bang about my hip or thigh as I walk. I also use the Black Rapid on my 100-400... comfort all the way.
You have just spent over £1,000 on the lens, over £1,000 on the 7D (or at least your GF did) yet you will not spend £60 on a strap...... that just does not compute....

I went the Op/Tech route, the scare-stories about fatigue in the Blackrapid lugs swayed me

I also like the way that the Op/Tech hangs the camera compared with the BR.

Straps are a very personal thing though, they are after all the interface between the camera/lens and you, the user, and the way they feel depends on your size and height as much as the camera. Trying the options out is the way to go here.

Read through this thread with interest as I am contemplating the 70-200 f2.8 IS II lens as treat in the new year, and have the option of a refurbished one.
Had read many reviews and this thread added nicely to those.
